Kian managed to avoid Elise for the whole day. He steered clear of the library where their bond told him she was working. He enjoyed watching her expressions change from curiosity to delight whenever she opened a book, but he had more pressing matters than ogling a woman who didn't know she was his mate.

Fionn looked at Kian from across the table like he was trying to figure out what had changed about him in the past few days.

"Have the young ones crossed over yet?" Kian asked, trying to get the meeting over with as soon as possible. The sky was darkening, and his anticipation of seeing Elise was gnawing at him.

"All of them went through the portal last night and have been placed with the families. They have sent their thanks to you for honoring your agreement and will hold a feast on your return to Faerie," Fionn reported.

"Thank you, you may leave," Kian said, dismissing him with a wave of his hand.

"Forgive me, my prince, but you should know that rumors are circulating amongst the warriors."

"What kind of rumors would those be?" Kian asked through clenched teeth. Now was not the time to deal with insubordination or disruption within the ranks.

"There are concerns about your attachment to that human slave of yours. You maimed one of our best warriors over her, and that hasn't been taken lightly by the others," Fionn replied. He had enough sense to look nervous.

"My human slave should be no one's concern. Aiden was punished for touching that which didn't belong to him. I won't have my warriors disrespect me in my own house. The human is nothing but food. I like the way her blood tastes," Kian replied coldly. "Shut them up, Fionn. You're my general, after all. I shouldn't have to reprimand my warriors like unruly children."

"Master." Fionn bowed low and got out of his sight. He was smart like that.

Kian had too much to think about to deal with gossipy warriors. He had been going over Killian's words in his mind all damn day. He was obsessing, and that was never a good sign.

Kian had measured the red in his hair to be sure of what he already knew. Drinking Elise's blood from a cup wasn't going to work. He needed to get her to trust him enough to take it directly from her, but Kian had no idea how he would manage it. Elise had been nervous the previous evening like he'd never seen before. It made sense that the encounter on the full moon had scared her. It had scared him too.

Kian was drinking wine and arguing with himself in front of the fire when he heard a tentative tap on the door.

"Come in," he called, expecting Hedera or Fionn back again to bother him. Kian didn't know how to react when Elise stepped through the door and into his chambers. Her hair was out in a long wave of dark curls over one shoulder, and Kian's mouth watered as her floral and sex scent hit him.
